The use of cotton for weaving is one of the oldest in the world, with traces dating back nearly 10,000 years.

According to the most common etymology, the term canvas would derive from the Latin word “cannabis,” originally indicating a fabric made from hemp fibers, but today it is universally associated with cotton.
It is a plain weave fabric, which means that the warp and weft threads cross over each other and under each other in a regular pattern. However, the threads are coarser and the weave is much denser than an ordinary cotton cloth, a characteristic that determines the excellent strength and durability of this type of fabric.
