Cotton is a natural textile fiber, which is made from the bamboagia (white, frothy filaments) that envelop the seeds of Gossypium plants, a variety of shrubs typical of the warm regions of our planet. The use of cotton for weaving is one of the oldest in the world, with traces dating back nearly 10,000 years.

The natural properties of this fabric

In fact, cotton is distinguished by a number of intrinsic properties that make it extremely versatile and popular for clothing and textile processing and for the home.

Its natural cellulose composition, combined with its hypoallergenic nature, make it ideal for people with sensitive skin or those who choose their purchases carefully and consciously. A philosophical approach that is at the heart of our work every day.

Another distinguishing feature of some fabrics made from cotton is their softness, a quality that provides a gentle and comfortable feel for the skin. In addition, cotton is an exceptionally breathable fiber with excellent absorbency, characteristics that make it perfect for towels, beach towels and for summer clothing in general.

In addition, its strength tends to increase when the fibers are damp, making it especially resilient to frequent washing and daily wear and tear.

Because of its extraordinary versatility, cotton can be processed in so many different ways, thus creating fabrics with very different characteristics and uses. Let’s take a detailed look at some of these together!

The cotton canvas

It is a fabric characterized by its marked strength and resilience (i.e., its ability to withstand external stresses and strains), produced from a very dense weave. According to the most common etymology, the term canvas would derive from the Latin word “cannabis,” originally indicating a fabric made from hemp fibers, but today it is universally associated with cotton.

It is a plain weave fabric, which means that the warp and weft threads cross over each other and under each other in a regular pattern. However, the threads are coarser and the weave is much denser than an ordinary cotton cloth, a characteristic that determines the excellent strength and durability of this type of fabric.

Cotton Muslin

Cotton muslin is a very light, open-weave, very soft fabric named from the city of Mosul, Iraq, where it is believed to have originated, on the banks of the legendary Tigris River in the Fertile Crescent.

This is a cotton fabric that is highly valued for its delicacy, due precisely to its characteristic “open weave”: a processing system in which the threads (both warp and weft) are spaced wider apart than in a traditional fabric. In this way, air can circulate more freely through the fabric, ensuring excellent breathability and quick drying.
